The World Cheese Awards took place in Spain last week and once again proved an inspiration to us all.

The great and the good from the world of cheese gathered for the event, held this year in the wonderful city of San Sebastian, Spain. Jeremy Bowen, who leads our wholesale cheese team, was a member of the prestigious judging panel, and had his work cut out tasting some of the best cheeses from seasoned artisan producers.  Competition was as fierce as ever - producers work hard to achieve an award, bringing fame to their cheese and recognition as a producer of distinct quality.

Hundreds of deserving cheeses were presented for judging and Super Gold Awards are given to the very best of the best from each category – only a handful of these special accolades are given each year, so they’re a truly special accolade to win.

Jeremy described the tense atmosphere of the judging:

“And after a briefing by John Farrand, the cheese awaits. Honoured to be a table captain, thank you Christabel, and thrilled with my three partners in crime - Julia Perez Lozano (a food journo from Madrid), the legend that is Juan Luis Royuela (cheesesemaker), plus Scott Crichton (Director Abergavenney Food Festival). We did our table proud and judged without squabble or madness. An honour and pleasure but our table was a tad ‘cheese safe’ with nothing screaming or shouting world-class.

“And the winner is … (drum roll please)…Each table put forward their Best Cheese (Super Gold) and then a panel of Worldwide Cheese Guru’s taste and challenge .

“Norwegian Blue with 72 points was named World Cheese 2016, a small cooperative produced cheese that the judges felt truly screamed best in show. Kathy Strange from Wholefoods USA and Suzy O’Reagan from Woolworths SA truly championing this distinct yet subtle blue cheese.

“Cheese is the hero and our amazing Judges Dinner at the Museo San Telmo stamped a Basque seal of Queso quality on the day. Amazing venue with wonderful local canapés (I never knew anchovies were hand filleted). Lovely to relax with other judges and talk the talk of the day, plus enjoy a spectacular San Sebastian dinner.”

Naturally, we are now going to explore whether we can stock this wonderful Norwegian Blue which is currently available only in its home country.
