Here at Paxton & Whitfield we pride ourselves on our knowledge and passion for cheese. That’s why the team at our flagship London shop was ‘over the moon’ to be crowned Cheesemonger of the Year at the Farm Shop and Deli Awards last month.
Hero Hirsh, manager of the shop in Jermyn Street, said: “It was amazing to receive this award. Last year we made the short-list so this year we were absolutely determined to win.”
The award recognises the best in class in the specialist independent retail market. They celebrate the very best standards, levels of service, product innovation and community involvement in the sector. We were named Cheesemonger of the Year after a number of ‘secret’ visits to see our Jermyn Street team in action – scores were counted and judged along with online votes from consumers.
Hero said the award is testament to our team’s passion for cheese.
“We want everyone to enjoy cheese as much as we do, and that means serving the very best of the traditional favourites and introducing new varieties which we think our customers will enjoy,” she said. “Ask any member of our team and they will be able to tell you about the about the provenance and flavour profile of every cheese and will be able to advise on the best accompaniments.
“Our aim is to deliver an amazing experience every time you enter a store and taste a Paxton & Whitfield cheese, and this commitment has certainly paid off with the very complimentary comments made by the judges.
” The judges’ comments on Paxton & Whitfield included: “Clear passion for cheese. Knowledgeable staff – internal qualification”, “200 years of expertise passion and reputation, hard to beat”, “impressive work in the wider community with the Academy of Cheese and helping small suppliers to market” and “good website."
Nigel Barden, Chair of Judges, commented: "Paxton & Whitifield is staffed by a well informed, trained and motivated crew. They started out in 1742, have two rooms on the ground floor that are packed with cheese in great nick and they also sell connected cheese paraphernalia. The basement is perfect for ageing cheese which is kept in the best condition and delivered by hand to trade customers in the locality."
