Plate Set Milk Bottle Tops

A set of 4 plates designed around milk bottle tops from the 1920s to the 1950s

A set of four 6.5" cheese plates carrying the images of cardboard milk bottle tops. Designs such as these were in common use in the UK from the 1920s to the 1950s. The tops were printed with advertisements for individual dairies. Many also featured a message about the benefits of milk in an effort to increase milk consumption.

In the 1940s, with foodstuffs in short supply, Paxton & Whitfield in Jermyn Street changed from a specialist cheese shop to an ordinary grocery shop, selling daily essentials such as eggs, butter and milk. They would have sold milk with cardboard bottle tops such as the vintage designs featured on this set of plates.

These porcelain plates are both microwave and dishwasher safe.
